Living in the city with all its light pollution doesn't give me much of an opportunity. About two weeks ago when we were camping at Lake Pillsbury it was a very dark night and the sky was awesome. Scorpio and Sagittarius were in the southern sky and the disk of the Milky Way ran between them all the way across the sky to Cygnus in the north. With my 10x25 binoculars, I gazed at M7, M6, the Jewel Box in Scorpio, the rich star fields in Cassiopeia, and the little fuzzy blob that is the Andromeda Galaxy. While the Andromeda is not much to look at, being so faint, it tickles me to no end that the photons hitting my eye from that little fuzzball have been traveling for 2.4 million years at 186,000 miles per second to finally hit the backs of my eyeballs, that it is the most distant thing anyone can see with the naked eye, and even then you really have to know where to look. The night sky is one of the most profound wonders of existence, the view of which civilization has all but eradicated with light pollution.

Just last night. I look at them every night that it's clear weather. I live in a VERY rural area and the stars look so bright that it seems like you could reach right up and snatrch one out of the sky. By the way, the Northern lights were lovely last night too.

It's one of my favorite things to do. I've got my kids doing it too. After putting them to bed, I made a fire in my backyard on Sunday night, and fell asleep in front of it, watching the stars. Very peaceful mommy time!
