The males are better looking in most bird species. The hard part in reproducing is finding the mate, and pretty is the best incentive in any species.

Yeah, in animals that would be mostly true - the male tries to attract the females - so the most colorful, the strongest, etc usually succeeds.
Seems to me though that the female of our species is much more attractive than the males lol

See, the way nature has it set up is that the male wants sex. Any sex, any time, with any female. So he has to be flashy and visually attractive to the females in order to get what he wants.
Females, on the other hand, don't have to be so flashy because the males will always find them, regardless. Nature makes them more plain looking so that they will have time to eat and sleep between encounters! ;-)

I have read that males have stronger features and are more colorful in most species. There's a difference in humans between handsome and pretty.
