Didn't you take government class in school? We are a Democratic Republic. We have voters rights and a Constitution like a Democracy, but we also have three branches of government. In addition to this we have Senators and State Representatives who represent each of the 50 states. We are much more detailed and voter focused than a Democracy or a Republic. We certainly do not have a Totalitarian system of gov't. That is the type of government that Hilary Clinton would push this nation towards if she was elected as president.

The answer is that the answer has nothing to do with "the events in Florida".
People in the U.S. call maize "corn"
they call bison "buffalo"
they call our govenment a "democracy".
And so forth.
Just watch Jay Leno and you will see how ignorant most Americans are.
A Democracy is a government ruled by the people; there is not one nation on earth that is now or ever was a democracy.
Our Government was originally set up as a representative government, also know as a republican govenment. It is not feasible, it is not possible to have a democracy. And, as ignorant as most people are, I surely would not want one.
Many of the Indian tribes WERE DEMOCRACIES; women had a say; if the majority decided something you did not agree with, you were free to go with yourself, your family, a band, whatever and do what you want.
Although the U.S. professes to NOT HAVE NOBILITY, the de facto form of Government is an aristocracy. It is also an atheocracy, as the Supreme Court, in direct violation of the Constitution, has made laws AGAINST religion and most personal freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution.
(please see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_forms_of_government
Originally the Government of the U.S. was divided into 3 parts:
(1) The Executive Branch, that part that decides things and executes (carries out) the laws and what needs being done.
(2) The Legislative Branch (Congress: both sides --- The Representatives and the Senators) which is to pass laws.
(3) The Judicial Branch, or those charged with interpreting laws.
But, as time went along, each of these branches APPOINTED people to do certain things. These include the EPA, the Department of Veterans' Affairs, the Department of Education, etc., etc., et al. Supposedly only Congress can pass laws; but as every American knows, each of these departments, etc., pass their own laws (just think of the IRS!)
To continue, each of these departments, etc., appoint people to do certain things. Each, in turn, passes their own laws. Most of the laws being passed (spotted owls, for instance) can have serious consequences, but no one voted for the laws or the people making them up.
Just listen to just about any news broadcasts: movie stars, sports stars, politicians, your local cops, all get to do things that if the common people (serfs) were to do them, they would go to jail for a long, long time.
This is why I (and many others) insist that we have an aristocracy: these sports stars, TV stars (Katie Couric, Tom Brokaw, et al), etc., have powers similar to the dukes and royalty of medieval Europe.
Even the Liberal Media has laws made...working people are mere surfs, with almost no rights. Yes, life now is better than 1,000 years ago, but that has nothing to do with the Government. It just means we are so much more profitable nowadays.

Constitutionally, it is a Republic with Democratically elected representatives. In short, it is a Representative Republic.
Our brilliant Founding Fathers understood the corrupting nature of power. Power corrupts and great power leads to terrible corruption.
To prevent this, our Founding Fathers gave us a Constitution that was designed to keep the power in the hands of the people. The Constitution stated the form of the government and the LIMITS of the government's power. The Bill of Rights delineates the rights reserved to the citizen.
Unfortunately, every generation since has been gradually permitting corrupt politicians and crafty lawyers to erode away those rights and your power.
Money is Power. If you give the government the power to tax away your money, you have given them the ability to take away your power and use it for THEIR purposes, leaving you without the power to fight for your own rights.
NEVER vote for anyone who wants to raise your taxes, restrict freedom of speech, or dilute or corrupt your vote by allowing illegal votes by various means.
NEVER permit further restrictions on gun ownership, freedom to practice your religion or restrictions or loss of property rights.
ANYONE wanting to pursue those courses of action is a potential TYRANT. Don't support them in any way and don't vote for them.
