I bought a new PC for me. I want my kids to have the old PC, but without the big clunky monitor. The 15-pin cable fits the plug on the back of the old PC, but do I need a different video card too?

YES, the missing pins in a VGA cable were simple not required in the specs, some cables have the pins, others do not.

As ling as it's a 15 pin High density Sub.D (IE the plug fits the socket) away you go
NO ADAPTER required

Your older VGA monitor's cable is missing pins that aren't required by the VGA specification; one of my flat panels is missing a couple of pins in it's video cable as well. As long as you have 3 rows of pins, it's considered a 15 pin connector. When it comes down to it, any PC made since at least 1992 has the same HDI-15 VGA connector on it, since that's when (at least to my knowledge) older standards such as EGA and CGA fell out of fashion.

Probably not since you have two different connectors. Not sure how old your computer is, but if it allows for expansion cards to be put in, you might be able to find a video card that will allow your flat panel monitor to be hooked up. I would just get a new computer, you old one is probably slow and on its last leg.

why would you? upgrade your PC while you are upgrading your monitor. thank yourself later for the hassles you saved doing so.

but if you must here is a link for the part:
