I wouldn't say I'm scared but I am always wary and it's getting worse now that the dark nights are coming.
I live in a block of council flats and it's not so bad in the flats as we have a 24 hour security office on the ground floor with two guys and CCTV of the surrounding areas.
But the scum know how far and where the cameras can see so if I do go out after dark I always stay in view of the cameras until I get to the main road. Even if there is a few of us because the little tw@ts hunt in gangs of 20 upwards.
The funny thing is though if they know they as a group have harassed you previously and you bump into one of them on their own they run a mile.

Funny you should ask that question. Some friends and I (all over 50 years of age) were just chatting about this the other evening. When we were young (stop groaning, young people!!) we could go anywhere at anytime of the day or night and not feel afraid. But that's all changed. Nowadays we all have reservations about going out at night and usually only do so if we're driving or taking taxi's there and back. It's a really sad reflection on 'progress', isn't it? One thing we agreed on though, it's not always that there is anything to fear, it's our perception that there is, that's changed.

Not here on the small estate where i live as i know everyone, but out there, yes. A lovely girl was kicked to death down the road here three weeks ago by five 15 year olds because she didn't have a cigarette when they asked for one.
Hell i used to walk alone on the moors when i was younger. Now i won't even go as far as the local shop!!

The council estate where I was raised as a child was much rougher than the area I live in now but it have its fair share of problems.
I'd love for some drugged up chav to pick a fight with me anyway...the closest most of them ever get to doing exercise is running from the police and I'v noticed that most of them weigh in at about 8 stone and live of mcdonalds, lambert and butler fags and cheap cider, hardly the lifestyle of a warrior is it?
I do feel sorry for the older generation though and the single girls. It must be intimidating to have to walk past a gang of the pr**ks alone at night.

I'm sorry your outside atmosphere is so bad... I have lived in similar situations and hated every single moment of it. Luckily now I live in my mom and dad's old home where I grew up, and it's a really nice old neighborhood. We live in the last loop of a 40 year old community, and you can go out here at 6am, 2pm, 10pm or 2am... it doesn't matter. It's as safe here as it can be anywhere. Of course, I realize crime happens anywhere, and it could happen here, but by and large, this is a great neighborhood, city and state to live in!

No, I don't live in the best neighborhood, but I am trained in three martial arts and if unless someone has a gun I'd be fine. I'm not exactly so attached to my life that I would avoid dangerous situations just to avoid the small risk of me being shot to death, pretty cool way to go I'd say :) We're all gonna die before long anyway.
