Today it pays to own either a vernier caliper or a 0 -1 micrometer plus a Starrett metric and standard thread pitch gage. You can always cheat by going to a hardware store or a specialty fastener house and carry in a mystery capscrew, bolt ot nut to gage threads pitches and diameters. The world is becoming more complicated every moment I'll admit.

The markings on the head shows, grade and type by Navy Army Standards or NAS grade. They are charts for that. For other types you can use a thread gauge for the pitch and another gauge for the diameter. Other markings will say if is a high tensile or lower. Depending of the application.

Take the bolt to an auto parts store. They will be able to tell you exactly.
