Close. But not quite.

Expectations are a COMPONENT of disappointment. If you expect nothing you cannot be disappointed. You may have other problems, but that won't be one of them. But that doesn't mean that expectations cause disappointment any more than gasoline causes cars.

What causes disappointment are EXCESSIVE expectations. If you have expectations that are certain to be fulfilled, how could you possibly be disappointed? Everything you expect happens! And expectations are also a component of achievement - so if you can set a realistic but difficult expectation, it can have quite the opposite result of disappointment.

So don't blame expectations as a whole... it's just an avoidable subset of all possible expectations that are causing the problem of disappointment.

The main cause of disappointment is looking for happiness in the temporary because what we want is something everlasting.

OTOH, how do you go through life without expectations?
