Noting a difference isn't necessarily equal to assigning a value as in better or worse. The biggest difference is certainly in the DNA chains followed closely by character. Animals will not fake love because they are incapable of doing so. Like saying goes: "If you are looking for real loyalty, get a dog" otherwise you run the chance of being dumped by your soul-mate. At the end of the day we come all from the same source - creation, which is a devine system put in place to give us life and the pursuit of happiness. Only humans have the power to mess it up. I think that's in the end the biggest difference.

This is quite a puzzle for me.

On one level, perhaps only consciousness. On another level we have to ask, are there ways where people could be superior or inferior to animals? That would be a case of spiritual development.

Physically speaking, most animals do not walk upright, and most mammals, even primates, have fur if they walk on land. According to the theory of evolution, people have evolved to take clothing almost for granted.

In another sense, the main difference is in the role we play. There is a tradition that the man is intermediary between animal and god. Since deity is seen as ultimate, this puts base man closer to animals, or even, some claim, beneath them in some spiritual sense.

One may argue that cognition or the ability to think is the difference, yet notoriously apart from specialized scanning (ala MRI, CAT-scan) thought is difficult to prove.

I have this concept of the "infernal teleprompter" that many people may be inclined to follow, if they are not fully self-possessed. In that sense willpower may be a major factor, although that is an even thornier issue, especially in philosophy. There are major world leaders I believe who have subscribed to fate (Napoleon, amongst others, if I remember correctly).

Even in a relative sense the humanity of an individual may be a matter of degree, and is partly a result of one's given conditions. Someone may seem literary but estranged from reality, fulfilling the role of thinking people, while another person may have more character but is more subject to common opinion. The second person may have a more 'human' experience without fulfilling as obviously the role of homo 'sapiens'.

Man has a soul, animals do not have souls. Our souls live on after we die - either heaven or hell - your choice.
