If your using latex paint the easiest way is to fill a bucket with about a gallon of water and add a tablespoon (doesn't have to be exact just a small amount thought) of any liquid fabric softener. Let set about a minute and then swish around for a minute and make sure all paint is off handle and where bristles connect. Rinse with cool water and smooth bristles and hang up to dry. When dry either rewrap in original cardboard or newspaper to store

I have been a professional house and commercial property painter for 33 yrs and the best way to clean a brush would be, Water if your using latex paint and low odor mineral spirits for an oil based paint. PLENTY of water, running preferred. Along with a wire brush. 5 gallon bucket if no running water. Dip brush forcefully and fully submurged, pull out and ring brush by grabbing bristle side and wring bristles upward twoard handle hard.. Do this over and over until no more paint comes out of bristles. Repeat with cleaner water and use the wire brush to clean near where the handle and the brisltes meet to rid of dry paint on this part. Place handle of brush in palms of your hands and twist brush back and forth, This will get out any ex-es water as the extra water will mold your brush and you will have to wash it all over again. Brush will look like it is frayed, grab bristles and smooth out.

If they are oil based then you can use mineral spirits ,If you just want to take a break and not let the brush's dry out then a painters trick is to keep the brush's wet. drop your paint brush into a tall plastic cup with water in it. this will keep the brushes from drying out. simply wipe off the moisture and keep on painting later.

Use the type cleaner recommended on the paint container. Latex is usually cleaned with water and soap. I clean mine and then afterwards, soak them in another batch of the soap and water for an hour or so to remove residue. Hang them so everything drips out of the bristles.

Step ONE... buy the BEST brushes you can afford !! Avoid Nylon or Synthetic bristles !!

I have a dozen "PURDY" brushes of different sizes and shapes (half of them are a decade old)... SAVE the cardboard "holsters" they come with.

Step TWO... CLEAN them follow the directions for the paint you're using (soap & water for latex / acrylic, mineral spirits for Oil based paints)... then clean them AGAIN.

Step THREE... buy a "brush comb"... a wire comb that helps pull the bristles straight. After you've cleaned them and brushed them... HANG them (or put back in their "Holsters"

I also use shampoo and conditioner (seriously) on my natural hair brushes. Especially after using mineral spirits... it restores the natural "oils".

If you're using the "Home-Depot/Lowes" type $2 brushes... throw them out after each use !!

Good Luck
