Both brilliant - I have had one of each now for over 4 years without a hitch. Touch wood! However, friends of mine have has failures with WD but of course there are more of them about.
Hope this helped a little

I have a 500 gb external LaCie drive. It cost me like $120 from amazon. It is working great. It was also easy to install. I plugged in the USB and waited a few minutes and my computer recognized everything without having to install the drivers. I'm using Windows XP, so I don't know how it will work on a Mac OS.

I'd go with the LaCie - they're a well-known supplier of Mac hardware. LaCie drives will most likely have FireWire connectors as well as USB.

I easily have a Lacie 250gb exterior USB HD.. i like it. It residences a lot song, video clips and pictures that i've got self assurance as though i'm wearing my finished laptop with me anyplace I take it. i desire to advise it from persoal use; I easily have had it over a 300 and sixty 5 days now (considering my final birthday easily.) and it has no longer as quickly as failed me. i myself load my iTunes library from the Lacie force; that is in many cases on factor with timing, song is in no way chopped sounding on each occasion I play it and that is incredibly user-friendly to hold and take everywhere. From all the machines i've got plugged it into no longer as quickly as have I ever gottena message asserting "This gadget ought to no longer be recognized." unlike different thoughts i've got heard approximately different call manufacturers. I say in case you choose for Lacie, that is a stable one. :)

Depends which you like the look of more.
Both great brands for Ext drives, personally I love the WD MyBook series, but that suits my needs and preferences.
Lacie are also a good brand, and are VERY polular with Mac users
