I have a 6,000 kbps internet connection and a typical ping around 200 for my online gaming. Is this an appropriate ping for the connection speed? If not, what are some general tips to lower my ping?

i have 2mb connection and i get pings of around 10-40 when playing games like counter strike.
The best way nto optimise your connection is to go into your router and set it up for gaming by opening ports that the game uses etc

There a million things that can effect a ping response time. Things you can change are to make sure that you have the current updates to your games software and that you aren't running other things on your PC besides the game. I.e. don't have IM running, email running etc.. while the game is also running.

Ping is a function of something in the Internet Protocol world known as ICMP.

In online gaming, what your pinging is the game server. What occurs is that one side (either your PC or the game server) sends a ping request to the other side. There can be delay caused by devices between you and the server. There are also delays (most common) of the two systems involved just responding to the ping request. If the two systems are busy doing other things it can become difficult to respond to ping. A different router or modem etc.. isn't likely to have much if any effect on your ping time. The most likely contributor is the capacity of the game server and your PC to reply.

depends what your pinging, it could be the server your trying to ping, try other IPs and see if its any better. Do a tracert and find the next hop outside your router and ping that
