First, how was your blood pressure measured? Most home bloodpressure monitors have not been validated, so the measurements are worthless! Check the british hypertension society site www.bhsoc.org with a list of validated home blood pressure monitors (note: almost all are upper arm cuff monitors, wrist and finger cuff monitors are notoriously unreliable!), and a lot of good information and advice too. According to Framingham, an upper (systolic) pressure of less than 150 mmHg is considered normal, the level of the systolic pressure (and NOT as had been believed for many years the diastolic or lower bloodpressure) correlates best with complications of high blood pressure such as stroke, myocardial infarction, heart failure, kidney failure and death. Loosing weight, drinking less alcohol/coffee, using less salt, avoiding liquorice altogether and more physical excercise (35 minutes of submaximal exertion e.g. on an excercise bike 2-3x/week suffices), and if you are interested relaxation techniques (effectieve in 3 out of 4 subjects!) would be a good start, but if you should need medicines at present betablockers are NOT the first choice (NICE recommendations, sorry door), usually a diuretic would do nicely, or a calcium channel blocker, of an ACE inhibitor. So see your doc and discuss these things with him. Beware of the so called white coat hypertension: people getting so stressed because they are seing a white coated attendant taking their bloodpressure that the bloodpressure shoots up.

Who is checking your blood pressure? If you are going to some place like the local store or pharmacy that you stick your arm in and it checks it for you for fee then it is more than likely not correct! You need to go and have a nurse or doctor to check it so you know what it is for sure!! I am a nurse!! The normal blood pressure is in the range of 140/88 the top number is a systolic pressure, the bottom number is a diastolic pressure!! When your blood pressure measures more than the set limits it can and will cause death!! High Blood pressure is known to be a silent killer! It is not something to be messed with!! You cloud be suffering from a wide range of medical issues! I suggest you go as soon as you can to have this checked out by your doctor or a free clinic!! The sooner you do it the better your chances are to get it under control and not have any thing damaged from lack of attention!!
I have put some links in for you to read about high blood pressure and some of the causes and side effects it can cause.
Wish you the very best of luck:):)

I was put on medication when mine reached 154/143. I have been on medication for 6 months and it is now 134/91. I had my check up at the hospital yesterday and I was told that I have to go back for another check next week as they are more concerned about the lower number and want it to be nearer 80. If this doesn't happen they are going to up my medication. The reading they are wanting to achieve is 120/80. Family history plays a huge part I have lost 3 close family members due to heart attacks. You are also at greater risk of strokes.

The higher the blood pressure the greater the helth risk. Most cases are mild to moderate ie: 140/90 to 160/100. In some cases the blood pressure is more severe ie 160/100 or above. In the UK about half of people over 65 and about 1 in 4 middle aged adults have high blood pressure. It is less common in younger adults. Ideally you should be below 140/90.

I would consider that you have high blood pressure.
Your doctor may prescribe diet and exercise to reduce it naturally. If it doesn't come down you may need to take medication. Of course it is hard to say given I have no family history, your age, etc.
The reason high blood pressure is danergous is because it increases pressure to make the circulation system going. This damages your coronary arteries which supplies blood to the heart itself.
Other self help tips:
Do not smoke, do not add salt to your foods, relax, avoid alcohol.

You should certainly discuss this with your doctor. The norm is 120/80 and you are over that. Uncontrolled high blood pressure increases your risk of serious health problems, including heart attack and stroke.

The standard of 120/80 is quite common. Some doctors would prefer it be even lower, especially if you have additional risk factors for heart disease. With your numbers, I would certainly see my doctor, especially if they are consistent across time and conditions.
