San Francisco is an absolute beautiful city. I lived there for 2 years. You will probably want to spend as much time as possible there since there are so many things to see and to experience. Definitely take the cable car that leaves on Powerll Street you will experience one of the most beautiful sights and views of the city; go over the Golden Gate Bridge and climb the mountain to see a full view of the bay area. After you pass the city you will see a small town called Sausalito, it is kind of nice (boring in my opinion)

You can go visit Carmel which is a nice beach town. If youa re interested you can visit Princepton University, and the town around the college is kind nice. You can also go to Berkeley and visit the town and Berkeley College. But again don't spend too much times on these places or any other, because SF has a lot to offer.

I don't know of any hotels, however you can try renting a private room in someone's apartment. Many travellers do that and it is much cheaper. The best site to go is:
www.craigslist.com
choose San Francisco and search under "room for share" or "temporary share".

Good luck

I would highly suggest raising your room budget to around $70 per night. In October you should be able to find an older but nice boutique style hotel for that amount. Try www.paramounthotelsinc.com - they own the Spaulding and Post Hotels near Union Square. I very much doubt you could find anything you would want to stay at with a private bath for $40 unless you use Priceline.

The Winchester Mystery House would be fun - and since you're coming in October they should have nighttime flashlight tours - see: www.winchestermysteryhouse.com

A cool, free place to visit is the Sutro Baths ruins. Check it out: www.sutrobaths.com

I would also suggest having lunch at the San Francisco Art Institute Cafe. It's inexpensive and has the best view of Alcatraz in the city. It's only open Monday - Friday and usually closes around 4 p.m. Visit: www.sfai.edu Note, while you're there you should checkout the student work in the Diego Rivera Gallery and see the large mural by Diego himself.

That should get you started!

San Francisco is America's second most expensive city. Demanding safe, private accommodations for under $40 will probably provoke locals to comment on your "sense of humor."

For under $40 a night, you might as well stay in a hostel. It'll require being a little more social, but at least it's relatively safe. Even the worse motels (Days Inn, Travelodge) will likely run at least $60-70.

There are no hotels near City College, but you can easily get there via I-280 or by subway. The Balboa Park subway station is right next to CCSF.

The list of places to go near San Francisco is endless: Muir Woods, Sausalito / Tiburon, Russian River, Wine Country, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, Great America Theme Park, San Jose, and so forth.

San Francisco has a much better tourism bureau than most U.S. cities. There's a convienent tourist office at Pier 39 ("P", Second Level) and another one next to the Powell Street subway station (Hallidie Plaza, near Union Square). They'll give you brochures, maps, and information on all the local sights.

I recommend the Exploratorium, the Hyde Street Pier, Alcatraz, and if driving, check out the amazing Monterrey Bay Aquarium. Cannery Row in Monterrey is good too.
