Likelyhood is it's a failed trasnistor in the LCD display (onme driving that line on the display)
Afraid only solution is an external monitor or a new screen, so I hope it's still under warranty.
IF in UK, (not sure on other vountries) and not far outside warranty, you can claim the "Not of a quality commenurate with the purchse price" and that a laptop display should not fail in xxx time period. And try to get them to at least meet you part way on costs.

Hook up an external monitor - does the line appear on it, too? (it probably won't)
If the line doesn't appear on the external monitor, you've got a bad screen. Unfortunately, there's no way to "fix" it - you have to replace the screen. Even more unfortunately, the screen is usually the single most expensive part on a laptop, often costing more than all the other parts put together. Unless it's a relatively new machine, you'd probably be better off just replacing it with a new one.

At the top, bottom, or some where in between?
If it is at the top or bottom then it may be the screen resolution.
If it is in between the top and bottom then your screen has been damaged. It is not repairable.
If the screen is damaged and still under waranty you may get the manufacture to replace it, other wise you will have to have it fixed or fix it yourself
If you are a do it yourselfer there are How to's on my web site:

liquid crystal show reflects are created from separate crystals that 'twist' to offer easy. whilst crystals bypass undesirable, that is whilst those lines take place. i might say you're close to to dropping a number of your crystals in the show. it's going to be coated by your guarantee, as long as you do no longer admit to leaving it out interior the sunlight. merely say 'it began happening rapidly' and deny any wrongdoing, and you would be superb.

Is it only there in Windows?
Is it there as soon as you turn on the computer (ie during the BIOS boot screen)?
Is it there if you plug in an external monitor?
