It was 4am, you were in a dense fog and you saw something? Are you surprised? I'd be shocked if my eyes weren't playing tricks on me in a dense fog at 4am.
You might want to consider what your eyes had been doing before you went out. If they were strained by watching the bright, multi-colored computer screen for hours and then you go out in a low-light situation, you may have created a perfect scenario for hallucination (especially since you were tired).

It seemed dark and shadowy?the most probably will be
'shadow people'( - apparitions that are coming to be known as "shadow people" or "shadow beings." Perhaps this is an old phenomenon with a new name that is now being discussed more openly, in part thanks to the Internet. )The term shadow ghost refers to a dark entity that appears as a indistinct shadow, sometimes they will be human in shape and size. They are usually seen as a fleeting shape out of the corner of your eye. Some have been seen during the day but more often at night.also some sightings have been reported frequently in woods, usually disappearing behind trees or traveling through upper tree branches.so i would say you have a 'paranormal' situation, check the links ,they might be useful for you...

first off, it's always a good idea to bring a knife when you're out and about at ungodly hours. i would like to ask you if there were any light sources nearby like light posts or porch lamps? the "shadowy figure" might just be your own shadow being projected into the fog.
edit: if there were no sources of light, then there is one more instance that i would like you to consider. you said you wanted to go back to your house, i'm assuming you got a little bit sleepy. the human mind can be very impressionable in a wake/ sleep state (this is the transit time between sleepiness and wakefulness) some irregularity will be amplified tenfold. there might have been some less dense packets in the fog and your brain magnified the form into something anthropometric.

Doesn't sound paranormal to me. There are a lot of factors in play here, as previous posters have mentioned. It was foggy, cold, and you were overtired. Sounds scary that you would swing your knife around at something you weren't sure what it was. But it sure would have been funny to watch I'm sure.

I have a lot of experiences, I don't know if you already heard this one... I went into the woods to pick up some bricks and old stones that were dumped there perhaps from a house fire. I wanted to build a stone wall near my deck to level out the ground and use the bricks for a patio, and some of the large flat stones some being flag stone for a walk way near all this and next to the picture window. Well I finally got all that hard work done. I fell off to sleep on the couch, next to the picture window which was next to the new walkway I build with the flat stones. I was in a good sleep, so my wife at the time put a blanket over me. I knew I was sleeping good, I could feel myself coming out of this good sleep, when I woke up, I felt a presence floating over me, so I kept my eyes shut, and I kick the blanket up in the air where I felt the presence of the spirit. It felt like it left, so I open my eyes, and nothing was there. One week went by, my wife was sitting outside on the stairs where the walkway was, she called me to come out there, she said there is some writing on that stone. I said, "Dam, I thought it looked like a grave stone when I brought it home." It said, Tilly Jones 1888....it was that spirit that came floating over me that night, trying to figure out who is sleeping next to his stone. Gave me the creeps~

No, this wasn't paranormal. This was most likely jsut something's shadow moving around which looked human. If you're tried, you can see things sometimes, and in the dark people can get scared. But there aint so such thing as the paranormal.

I don't think it's paranormal.
Most likely it is your body heat causing condensation of the fog and therefore forming a shadow that you can't touch (the condensation can only be formed 1 or 2 feet from you and slightly above you)
but then again, I could be wrong

It is hard to say for sure. Try going out at around the same time if it is practical to do so and take a video or camera with you. If you see it, try to get it on film.

It almost sounds like you were being led to something, maybe with ADEQUATE protection, and a buddy, and a cell phone, try to go back out, if you're not too freaked out. The only reason I say this is because it seemed like it was dancing out of your range, like it WANTED you to follow. And dude? Don't pay attention to any of the smart asses who think it's OK to mock, cause if anything happened like that to them, they wouldn't sleep for weeks. Some people that answered you seemed like real jerks. Anyway, I think you should seriously try this, please let me know what happened, you can contact me through my profile. Good luck!!
