Is obtaining the license to run a small winery in Michigan difficult? What does the process consist of?

Start by contacting some of the existing wine makers... they will have a wealth of knowledge that they will likely be glad to share.

As for the license itself, check out the link to the .gov website... you'll need to be registered with the ATF as well as the state.

File the papers, pay the fee, get the license. The license fee depends on whether you are a large producer or a small producer. MICHIGAN LIQUOR CONTROL CODE OF 1998 (EXCERPT), Act 58 of 1998, §436.1525. http://legislature.mi.gov/doc.aspx?mcl-436-1525
