The two components are the horizontal component of
displacement and the vertical component of displacement.
Imagine a right triangle with one angle 24°. The side
opposite the 24° angle (the shortest side) is the vertical
displacement; that is, how far down the sub goes on this
dive, which is 92 m. times the sine of 24°, or 0.4067
92 * 0.4067 = 37.4 meters, which is the distance down
the sub went. The horizontal displacement equals 92 m.
times the cosine of 24° which is 0.9135
Thus the sub covered a horizontal distance of 84.042 m.
on this dive (92 * 0.9135) while going down 37.4 meters.
