I am working with a photographer that is going to do my modeling portfolio for free to post on his website but he said he would put my pics on this website where anybody that needs a model just goes in and purchases the pic. No idea where it will end up.

Is this normal for a photographer to do?
Is it recommended that I let my photographer do that???
Is it ok for my modeling career?

Please give me all the info you can... I am all new to this.

Thanks!

First off, it's not a scam. You are being told up front the uses the picture will be put to. Second, since you are not being charged for your portfolio, you are actually getting a pretty good deal. The photographer is entitled to try to recoup his expenses, and by putting his pictures in a photo service, he is actually protecting his product against nefarious use.

Any time you model for anybody, you will be asked to sign a release. Once an agency signs you, the agency will make all of those legal calls, but for now, you are a free agent.

Well I'm a model, part time, and I have heard of them putting picks on the net, so clients can pick out the model they want. Famous model agencies like Elite & New York model agency does it, but their professional. So be cautious and figure out what site it is, cuz a lot of times when it seems to good to be true it usually is. So be very cautious, DON'T TAKE ANY NUDE PHOTOS.........that's the biggest mistake u can do. But if u know this photographer real well then u should know if he would do that to u. Well jus' be careful, and ask him what site he's puttin' yur pics on. Also u have the right to say u DON'T WANT yur pics on the web, so remember that. Hope this helps u, model to model.

It is normal for a beginner photographer that just about to begin his career and in need to show off his work to people.
(Perhaps, that is why he is doing it for free..)

I have seen this kind of practice around.
Depending on what kind of pictures you are talking about,
(if it is artistic nude- you should be especially wary!)

you should approach this carefully for your own and his sake as reputable model and photographer.

The most important thing is communication.
make sure to get EVERYTHING in writing.. speak all of your concerns to him. and then bring your demands to the table.
and ask him to write down a formal CONTRACT that is law-binding. If possible, get a witness to sign the contract.

and ONLY do the job (i can't emphasis more on ONLY)
after everybody sign the agreement.
So, if one of you break the agreement, that somebody is liable under the law.

It is NOT normal. But, it is not normal for a photographer to work for free, so, odd arrangements could be expected.

One thing, he should not publish the photos without your permission, IN WRITING, on a release form. If you don't know what a release form is, perhaps you are not ready to be modeling.

i'd worry about where the pics would end up and if you were being fairly compensated for their sale. you don't want you face to be photoshopped onto porn site do you? could happen. and if the photographer is making money off your face, how do you know you're getting a fair cut? you need to have more control in the situation. i'd just let me do my portfolio and that's it. and if he does use your face without permission he can get in big trouble.

If his intent is to sell your image. You need to negotiate a cost and be sure he will not alter the images. If the images are not for sale, he can block anyone downloading them. He will need to talk with his web-designer.

I don't think it sounds like a good idea. Look at his website and see what kind of items he has posted. And are these images OK for your Grandmother to see?? If not....SAY NO

Basically he is selling your image but telling you its for a portfolio. A portfolio is simply for perpective clients not for sale. It is supposed to be a tool for you to use as an example of your looks or for him to showcase his talent. The web site smells like a scam to me.
