i have a 88 mustang 5.0l with tons of mods, the car runs and drives great, with the exception of this smoke, its only done it twice, and ive narrow it down to both times the car had about 1.5 to 2 gallons of gas, (mustangs only have a 12 gallon tank, i fill it everyday just about), but with the gas that low the car will smoke a thick white smoke, not oil or coolant burning i know those smokes, but more a heavy white smoke that smells almost of kerosene, after i fill it up with fuel 93 octane or higher its fine.....any clues???

You have water in the tank. Empty it and clean it. White smoke is most likely water vapor, Black too rich on fuel air mix, Blue is Oil. Have you use any additives in the fuel? Perhaps was one those that did not mixed well and is heavier than the fuel and sits on the bottom of the tank.

Sounds like rich fuel mix.

Just to double check, make sure all plugs are working correctly as they should. You might have one not hitting like it should. (Slight possiblity)

I dont think your cat is clogged.

I dont think your vehicle should go for regular gas. Your vehicle sounds like it needs the higher octane to burn right.
I think I have a slight clue to the mods you put into it, and burning low octane fuel it just wont do. Stick with the high octane, your vehicle will thank you and praise you for it. Kinda like giving a dog the really really good treats.

Not positive, but maybe have condensation in the tank and you're getting a mixture of fuel and water when you get that low on the tank.

Try a bottle of "Dry gas" next time you fill up.
