I quit smoking last Thursday cold-turkey (I was a pack/day smoker). The hardest times for me are while driving and after eating. How long does it take before the urges go away and the habit is broken?

The time varies with each person. It could be measured in weeks, but it will probably take longer.

You will know you have closed that chapter of your life when you enter a smoke-filled room, or come into close proximity with a current smoker, and you find the smell of smoke distasteful, perhaps even offensive.

At that moment the urges will stop.

I am not saying you will be unsuccessful by going cold turkey, but nicotine replacement is much easier to bear!

The nicotine acts on the brain and excites receptors... So when you deprive the receptors of the nicotine, they go bananas! I personally found sucking a nicotine lozenge after eating and when driving highly beneficial and eventually, I replaced the lozenge with mint gum..and hay presto, I was a non smoker!

I have to say that the mad urges for a cigarette take a while to go (a good month or two) but then comes this sudden fancy for a cigarette every now and again, that you can shrug off. But in truth, that takes much longer to go and even now, eight years on, I still have that tiny urge from time to time.

The greatest deterrent I have is the stench of others who smoke, I can not imagine smelling like that anymore....how awful!

Well done for quitting, stick with it, you will soon smell sooooo sweet and be much richer too!

Supposedly 3-4 weeks.
