A rebound is the act of successfully gaining possession of the basketball after a missed field goal or free throw. For instance, a player shoots the ball anticipating a basket. However, the ball bounces around the rim, subsequently bouncing off. Whatever player ends up with the ball, has successfully "rebounded" the ball.

A rebound in basketball is the act of successfully gaining possession of the basketball after a missed field goal or free throw. Rebounds in basketball are a major part in the game, as most possessions end after a missed shot.

Rebounds are divided into two main categories: offensive rebounds, in which the ball is recovered by the offensive side and does not change possession, and defensive rebounds, in which the defending team gains possession of the loose ball.

Rebounds are credited to the first player that gains clear possession of the ball, or to a player that successfully deflects the ball into the basket for a score. Because fighting for a rebound can be very physical, rebounding is often regarded as grunt work.

When a shooter misses a shot, the team that retrieves the ball has recovered a rebound. When a member of the offensive team recovers the rebound, the offensive team regains possession and the shot clock starts over. When the defensive team recovers the rebound, it then plays offense. Strength, natural instinct, and good positioning and timing are important to good rebounding.

When a person shoots the ball at the ring, and misses, it is the duty of another player(s) from the same team to try and grab the ball, before the other team players get it. If the same team person grabs the ball in time, its called a rebound. This is done by tall and strong players.
