If the valves are bent, do you think the whole engine needs to be replaced or just the valves and what kind of long term damage can that do?

If yours is the V6 engine you should be OK. Its not an interference engine. BUT if you have the 4 cylinder you may not be as fortunate. It is listed as an interference engine. Depending on circumstance it may survive but it doesnt look good. Often a quality used engine is the best solution if the valves have contacted the pistons and damaged both. A technician with a borescope (he can look in the combustion chamber) can tell you what damage has taken place.

i recently replaced a timing belt on a eclipse because the guy didn't want to pay for a new head . so he asked me to put a new belt on it and he will drive it like that. just his luck was that he didn't keep turning it over till the valves bent way too much
the engine started fine and had a little rapping that went away with time and he still drives the car with the same head on it . thing is before you spend all that money getting a new head ,have someone put a new belt on it and see how she runs changing the valves might be a 400 dollar job whereby the engine may run you in the $1500 range.. if you didn't spin your engine over while the belt broke you can still bring that same engine to life .

you have an interference engine. if the timing belt breaks, you are going to bend some valves when the pistons crash into them. It isnt going to be a cheap fix.

Don't have the engine "rebuilt" in a garage somewhere, your wasting your money. Either sell the car or have a new remanufactured engine installed. You can price out a new remanufactured engine at http://www.jasperengines.com but don't expect to have one installed for less than $3000.

From what I've read online, yours is an interference engine.

Sorry. I think it's going to be very expensive.
