Willingham is a great coach. ND is dumb for getting rid of him.
I'm in no way a ND fan, but I have to give props to Ty.

Weis has had 3 recruiting classes. His first year was rushed but he still recruited 15 players. His next two classes he recruited the 8th ranked classes. He actually has recrutied some good players. That Young kid was 11th ranked in the country in 2006. He should be a monster on the oline already based on the talent he came in with. In 2006 ND had 5 of the top 100 players. The elite high school players like this should be contributing as sophmores and making the team better.
The truth is Weis does not know how to develope talent and the ND fans are in denial. They don't want to have to endure another rebuilding process. Unfortunately that is what they are going to have to do.

Willingham hasn't exactly turned UW around either. They showed today against Ohio State that they've got alot of work to do. I think the underlying point is that it seems pretty evident that Weis will lose his job at the end of this season, I can't imagine that not happening. Notre Dame's got to give a coach a chance to recruit for a few years and see how those classes turn out. It seems three years is going to be their limit, and I don't think that's enough time to turn around a program that's been in turmoil.

Who blames Willingham?
Weis sucks as a recruiter. Also it hard to recruit at ND, b/c of academic restriction they put in place a few years ago.

You are completely incorrect.
Weis' recruiting classes are now true freshmen and sophomores and his recruiting classes have been ranked in the top ten in the country every year. They are just too young and inexperienced right now.
Weis won with a few recruits from Willingham's first recruiting class but he has absolutely nothing to work with from Willingham's next two recruiting classes. Notre Dame's third, fourth and fifth year players right now were all recruited by Willingham.
Here are some facts.
1. Some of Weis' key players the last two years were from Willingham's first recruiting class (Smardjiza, Quinn) but none were from subsequent Willingham recruiting classes. Some key players were actually from Bob Davey's recruiting class (McKnight, Fasano, Stovall).
2. Bob Davey was not a great head coach but he was a decent recruiter and at least kept ND in national relevance with respect to recruiting. Willingham's first recruiting class was ranked 12th in the nation by Rivals.com but his second was ranked 32 and his last was ranked 40th in the nation. Those players are the seniors and juniors that Weis is playing with now. Those classes were so weak that many of Weis' freshmen and sophomores are forced to play.
3. Notre Dame has always had highly ranked recruiting classes and Willingham's inability to continue that trend lead to his firing much more so than his coaching.
4. Having said that, however, Quinn and Smardzija were considered busts under Willingham's coaching and emerged under Weis' tutelage.
5. Willingham won his first 8 games at ND which led to him receiving coach of the year honors. Not only did he lose the rest of that season but he never had a winning season again. He finished with one winning season (his first) a record just above .500, three straight final game loses of over 30 point margins and two back-to-back recruiting classes that were ranked among the worst in ND history. Yes he brought 2 or 3 good players in his first year but none followed suit.
6. Weis has had back to back seasons with 10 and 9 wins and has a winning percentage of almost .800 entering this season. By comparison to Willingham, his recruiting classes (including his incoming 2008 class) have been ranked 8th, 8th and 1st in the nation.
7. This year his first and second year players are his recruits but his third, fourth and fifth year players (supposed to be your biggest contributors) are all Willingham's from his poor recruiting classes. The cupboard is bare and it will take Weis a season or two to bring his young recruits up to speed, particularly on the offensive line.
8. Three games do not a season make and Weis will likely bring this season around to about .500 which is as good as TWO of Willingham's seasons.
Willingham was (and is) a good coach but a fair recruiter at best. If you can't recruit at Notre Dame, you can't recruit. He was a good coach who was fired to make way for a great coach and the next two years will determine if Weis is that great coach or not. The people answering your question do not have the facts and don't back up their opinions with facts and numbers. Most importantly they don't understand that Weis is still primarily dealing with Willingham recruits and that is the main reason for his struggles.

I didn't know they were blaming him. I thought they were basically saying the recruits just appeared from thin air, won't admit they were Weiss's recruits but 3 years means can't blame the guy before him. Yeah they REFUSE to admit that Weiss can't win. They refuse to admit he is part of the problem.

It is interesting that ND is struggling now.
In the next couple of years, we'll see what Charlie Weis can do with HIS talent....perhaps then we will find out if the move to fire Willingham so hastily was a good move.

Is it a coincidence that any coach that Bill Belichick has under him does well in his(cheat first) system? I mean look at it, Charlie Weis was look at as a offensive genius under Belichick. Now he went on the coach at Notre Dame, he is responsible for the worst offense in College Football. Is this a coincidence? You tell me...
