Yes!! I agree. It's frustrating trying to teach my child how to read. Children automatically go with how a word sounds. I can understand why so many people are dyslexic in this country. We have so many rules (and exceptions to those rules) in our language. I don't know how anyone can learn American Standard English! I took Spanish in high school. We were taught that every letter in a word has a sound (no silent letters!), and that every letter's sound (even vowels) stays the same. So, for example, the letter "a" always has the "ah" sound, no matter where it is in a word. To me, that makes sense.

I think the spelling can be the phonetic, but the English has the rules that are meant to be the broken.

I agree, but these are not the only ones that will drive you over the edge. The English language is full of them & yes, it is my first language.
Pronunciation will drive you nuts.

The english laguage is considered the hardest to learn. I'm still finding out stuff about it.. I'd really like to learn japanese though.
