The fact that the spelling is far from phonetic - the same combinations of letters can stand for totally different words, like the "ough" in "tough", "though", "drought", etc.

Who said spelling ought to be phonetic? Especially in a language which draws from many, many others, one can hardly expect uniformity.

Was spelling tough for you when you were in school? So many of our words come from different languages so of course the spelling
will not always follow phonetically. That is just the way English is.

Just incase AUNTY posts, shes' stealing other's answeres and getting the good votes on them.
I said earlier to try pluber an lumber and how english is a hard language and such, then I see where she copied and pasted word for word. So keep an eye out!

Or "I'll Wind up this toy"

The english laguage is considered the hardest to learn. I'm still finding out stuff about it.. I'd really like to learn japanese though.
