As already mentioned, it is "counterclockwise", if the engine is still in the car, you can try putting the car in gear, (just for extra safety), block the wheels for extra safety, and lock the pulley with a bar, then, (if you have one, use a 3/4" socket & bar), spray the bolt with penetrating oil or simillar before attempting to undo, (let it "soak" for a while), If this fails, through lack of pulling power/strength, (no insult intended) try using the socket and bar in the lower position and assist it's lift with a jack under the bar,(not too much though or you'll end up lifting the car), then push downward on the car to cause a vibration type motion, again, be very carefull if trying the latter. The latter is not very authodox, but it may do the trick. good luck. take care.

As everybody says, normal thread but extremely tight. If you are adventurous there is an old trick I used once and never again. Put a socket on the bolt with the handle on the right side as you look at it from the end. Put a jack stand under the handle and make sure it is well settled by jacking up the driver's side of the front of the car an inch or two, then letting it down so the handle is well and truly pressing on the jack stand. Take a deep breath and hit the starter for a fraction of a second - no more. The front of the car will rise alarmingly (nobody warned me about that part!) and, with luck, the bolt will have broken free. Note - this trick can't be used with Hondas, most of which run counterclockwise. I had used a variation before that, with a helper jamming the flywheel and putting a floor jack under the socket handle. I use an impact wrench now, which is the classy way to do it.

Theres allways good answers on here One fact is the honda engine used in triumph acclaim etc was in fact clockwise,having said that you can first try with the gearbox in first,someone on the brake pedal [not clutch down ] slowly do a wind up of the engine and if your lucky.A second way is to jam a socket and bar to the chassis and click the starter motor a few times If not remove the starter motor and jam the flywheel PLEASENOTE the honda engine fitted to rover where ANTI CLOCKWISE despite being told cars dont do this Check a triumph acclaim or rover 213 manual if you can Stay lucky

All crank shaft bolts turn counter clock wise to remove. Does not make any difference on what kind of car or the year. Farm tractors are the only ones that go clock wise.

Check to see which way the pulley turns when the engine in running, the pulley bolt undoes the same direction.

i know this piece of info is useless, but on GM 4-cylinders (2.5 iron duke) the bolt goes counterclock wise. but this both will be extremely tight. use a long screwdriver to wedge in the flywheel so the engine doesnt turn over. if the braking system is still hooked up, have someone hold the brake as hard as they can

I just did one for a friend a year ago... and I'm certain it was counterclockwise... I think it'd remember it being clockwise because that's very unusual.

If it's tight, remember it is torqued to 159 ft/lbs. You'll need air tools to get it loosened or a LONG breaker bar.

counter clockwise its just tight you need something to keep the pulley from turn i normally wedge a crowbar into one of the holes and the frame an duse abreak bar to loosen it there are other ways thats just the way i do it

Anti-clockwise. Remove starter or plate and jam the flywheel to give better locking.

It's just VERY tight.
