I recently received a newsletter on how to protect yourself during an earthquake, and it was very interesting.

First of all, do not hide under a table or stand in a doorway. When the roof falls in, these things will collapse right on top of you.

The safest place in not under a bed, but next to the bed in a crouching position. Or at the end of a couch in a crouching position. Crouching right up next to the outer part of a building is even a safe spot.

The reason for this is that there is a small void next to big objects called the triangle zone or the triangle of life. When things fall or collapse onto bigger objects like beds or couches, it is the area right next to those objects that are void of fallen debris.
