I've gone 4,500 miles & the oil life indicator is still at 60%--can I really go 10,000 miles without an oil change? Seems like a lot! Don't want to screw up my new car...

Most car now these days will go to 7,500 miles without an oil change. Synthetic oils will expand it even further as far as 15,000 I change mine when my Car Computer tells me on highway driving is about 2 times a year. Is an old saying around that you have to change the oil every 3,000 that is an Urban Legend. Go with your Owner's Manual tells. You can not go wrong and will not void your warranty.

I tore down some Turbo Shaft engines on helicopters. They use synthetic oils and they run on some sections as hot as 600C. The oil is changed about once a year or when an oil sample comes bad from the lab. On a car believe it or not they run cooler than the an Aircraft Engine.

So far, I have not blown an engine.

You are a wise person! If you value your your new car 5,000 mile oil changes using full synthetic Mobil 1 will make it last forever. 10,000 mile oil changes are for people who travel across the USA three times within a period of 6 months. City driving is absolute hell on any gasoline engine as gum, varnish and moisture rapidly build up in critical areas around piston rings, lifters, and camshafts. Not to mention the detergent protection that is lost to keep the motor clean inside.

With the newer engines and oil, yes! Best thing thaw is at 5,000 or so start checking it every 300 to 500 miles and make sure you use a good grade of oil if you may have to add any.

I did my first oil change on a new Honda with the maintenance minder system at 4400 miles, but I was at 15% at that time, if in doubt just get it changed, you don't have to wait until it gets to 15%

You're overdue. On a brand new car, the original oil should be changed by 3500 - 4000 miles, including the filter. After that, I recommend a change of both every 4500 miles, max!

If in doubt, check the service manual and make sure you have the proper oil in it. You could call the dealership and confirm.
