Yes, they do. My name is Gary and I am japanese american. I found out that the Japanese enunciation of Gary is ge-ri or diarrhea. So people will laugh or giggle young and old.
So, I made it a point when I did visit Japan to say ge---ri or use my last name.
Now, I know why my grandmother did not like my name.

Maybe. Esp if you say your first name is "Gary" and your last name is "Bempy."
Not if you say your last name is "Cooper."
Everybody here knows him, esp. elderly people. I don't know if there's such a name as "Bempy" in English.

if you pronounce Japanese way it is not even sound close to ä¸ç¢( ã²ãªdiarrhea) because Japanese way to pronounce Gary is ã²ã¤ãªã¼ or ã²ã¼ãªã¼.
diarrhea is "geri"ãã²ãª
Gary is "geirii" or "geerii"ãã²ã¤ãªã¼ããã²ã¼ãªã¼

english names are not funny name in japan.
some other country's names are sometimes funny to japanese. but not english name.
