A normal degree for a software engineer is a BS in Computer Science but that is not the only path. Some have a BS in Electrical Engineering and some I know do not even have a degree. ( they started a long time ago when requirements were not so strict )

In addition to the degree, they normally need training in the software or language they will program in. Java, C, C++, etc.
