There are many reasons. The "British Empire" colonized parts of almost every continent in the world. They spread their language and culture to Asia, Australia, Africa and of course, North America. Then, after the United States became a super power there was another English speaking country spreading its culture and influence across the world. Look at American music. It is listened to in almost every country in the world. That's how popular it is. The English language has become very dominant and significant mainly because of the cultural influence of England and the USA.

That story is an urban myth: German is an important language in Europe, but unlike French, Spanish, or Arabic, it has never been a world language. A language becomes a world language because it is spoken by an important mercantile and economic power. This is how French, Spanish, and Arabic established themselves - and also how Portuguese and Dutch moved far beyond their natural borders. It is also true of Urdu and Mandarin in Asia, and to some extent of Swahili in East Africa. English has become so very dominant because of the historical accident that a spell when England was the world's most important trading nation (1550-1850) was suceeded by a period when the United States (which also speaks English) took over that role. No language since Latin has been so dominant for so long; no language since Latin has been so widely adopted.

Looks like your teacher gave you the answer there, don't you think?

The British empire extended to almost 2/3 of the known world and they spoke English. See the connection?

There have been recent developments too: It is said that the dawning of the Internet, sealed English as the 'world's second language' as so much of the www is written in that language.

It is not the case that English is spoken by the most people, Chinese would get that accolade, Spanish would get a look in too, but as a second language it is nearly universal now.

"Modern English is sometimes described as the global lingua franca.[1][2] English is the dominant international language in communications, science, business, aviation, entertainment, radio and diplomacy.[3] The influence of the British Empire is the primary reason for the initial spread of the language far beyond the British Isles.[4] Following World War II, the growing economic and cultural influence of the United States has significantly accelerated the spread of the language. On an average school day approximately one billion people are learning English in one form or another."

Because during the time of the British Empire, they ruled land all over the world. Hence the phrase, "The sun never sets on the British Empire." During that time, British influences (including the English language) were spread throughout the world.

Perhaps a mixture of British influence around the globe before World War 2 and American economic power make English the language of business.

The reason English has spread is because in the 19th century, the British Empire controlled much of Africa, India, Australia, and China. Their officials spread the language to the native populations

This is my guess:

"The sun never sets on the British Empire." This tells you, at one point in time the Brits had land/colonies around the world. The language came with them as they settled these places. Time has changed what they control and don't.

The USA is very involved in the "life" of the world. We expect people to learn our language not us learning theirs.

I do feel if you live in the USA, you speak English.
I also feel, I should learn at least basics words in the language of the countries if I am going to be there.
