It is the language of the nation, it is the language used in the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. All of our laws and official records are in English. It would be foolish to try to start making our nation use another language or even to keep records in a second language. If you want to be an American then speak the language of America.

English IS the Official langauge of the United States. In ordser to become a citizen, on emust be able to read and write English. I however do not have any problem with bi-lingual education, or with bi-lingula notifications and newspapers. If an American were to migrate to another nation, they would initially have trouble adjusting to a new language, but would find most other nations much more receptive to helping them along than the U.S.
A little off the point, but maybe we should all learn Spanish instead. It is a much easier language to learn than English.

In order to have a functioning society, we need to be able to speak to and understand each other.

Bilingual societies always have many problems. Not least of which, having a separate language usually means having a separate culture as well.

We can't function if we're not all working together, with common basic assumptions about what this country should be, and a shared way of expressing ourselves.

PS Just to repeat, I know of no multilingual societies that do not have deep divisions based on language, culture, etc. Even Canada comes to mind.

The prime reason being communication. It is difficult to enter a store, a school, a hospital and not speak the same language as those there to assist you. You won't be successful in your career if you don't speak the language of those in whom you deal with.

Road signs are my primary concern. In the US today, you can choose to take your driver's test in a different language.

Sure, some of signs can be told by their shape, but some can not. Standardizing the language would make it much easier.

For one thing, it's part of what gives a nation it's identity. Also, it's good for the economy. I can travel 3000 miles or more and have no trouble with conducting business in the same language. Try that in Europe.

Because it is the language spoken by the overwhelming majority of our citizens. I personally am offended when I have to press 1 for English. If someone wants to live in this country. Learn the language. We shouldn't have to dumb ourselves down to make immigrants feel more welcome.

A person chooses to live in a country thats constitution was written in English.

That person should should assimilate into the country that they will be living in, that country should not change to accomidate that individual.

How do people think most other countries enforce their immigration laws? They aren't as nice as we are and they do not tolerate individuals who cry about their wants if they dont get it.

As I said before, if you do not like this country please leave it.
