The answer "a celebrity" makes me laugh because William Shatner was in Pennsylvania a few years back to attend the Devon horse Show (he may have been riding in it that year). He thought he could walk from his hotel, I don't know what map he was looking at but he was 10 miles from the show grounds. I saw in an interview that he started hitchiking and no one would pick him up. He was like - Captain Kirk couldn't even hitch a ride.
I'm sure people driving by were thinking "Was that Captain Kirk?......Nah! Why would he be hitchhiking in PA!" lol
Only person I ever picked up was a local guy who went to my high school.

What's crazy is I would NEVER think of picking up a hitchhiker on my own, but they find ME! There I am at a stop light, like everyone else, and someone will walk up and tap my window to see if they could get a ride to a few blocks down the road! (Men, women, teens of all races) This has happened more times than I can count, and they always tell me I "looked friendly." One day, I'm gonna be one friendly-looking corpse!

Couples or teenagers with backpacks.
If they look strung out, eyes all bugged, or just unstable, I'll let 'em keep walking. But I've picked up hitchers a couple times and still haven't been abducted and disembowled.

I don't pick up hitchhikers. It is against the law in our state.
