Why is it when it's dark, cold, wet, rainy out (usually autumn) people enjoy eating say, french onion soup, or chicken and dumplings or a bowl of chilli?

Could be that it is comfort food and reminds them of when they were kids and their parents fed them soup. Or, it could be because people are starting to feel a chill in the air and want to warm up.

Because soups and stews warm your body better. And it's become a comfort food in that type of weather.
