Why isn't an alien virus possible? I thought that was one of the possibilities of the source of life on earth. Even if that isn't the case, maybe the meteor contained some sort of gas that might make people sick. I dismiss the mass hysteria theory.
There is also the possibility that the crash of the meteor just happened during the start of the Peruvian flu season.
I do hope if it's some alien virus, it doesn't change humans into flesh-eating zombies.

It's interesting. They mentioned boiling water at the bottom of the crator. Scientists theorize that most of the water on the planet came from meteorites & comets over the milenia; maybe what hit Peru had a large amount of hydrogen.
As it burned up, the meteorite also looked very green. Iron? It's been a good long while since I've been in a lab burning things... Still, my guess would be that it was just too much of something normal that caused people to become ill, rather than some kind of space virus. Even the dust & debris kicked up could cause respritory distress; headaches, etc.
All very interesting, though. Peru has a long history of meteorite impacts. In substantially greater number than most regions, I think.

As I read from AP, the meteorite was a hot ball hitting the earth. So with high temperature, it certainly has evaporated some of solid either in the earth soil or in the meteorite itself. The resulting fume or gas can be toxic. That explained with the policemen who investigated at the scene were so ill that they were even hospitalized and the villagers were only dizzy and vomiting.

Could be mass-hysteria, or radiation, or some sort of poison gas.
An alien virus seems unlikely - but if it is something like that, it would sure add a major new chapter in science books.
Of course, if we start seeing these things hitting all over Earth, and lots of people getting sick, it might be the opening salvo of an alien attack on our planet.
By the way, for everyone who hasn't seen it, here is the link to the news story:

The most likely explanation is that the locals thought it was a plane crash and then went into thee debris much faster than they would have otherwise, so they could rescue people. This exposed them to smoke, steam, etc.. Same as any firefighter.
But.......
a virus from space would be the first known, but not a crazy crazy idea.

It's not a "disease." People were feeling nauseus and had headaches. Big deal. That kind of thing can happen when exposed to noxious fumes. It will pass...though I have no doubt that there will be bogus sotries about this for years.

I doubt that it is true, it is probably a coincidence that the 2 events happened in the same general area, it's like saying my car crashed because there was a oil truck spill 2 blocks from my accident.
