Can I connect to the internet without having a phone line hooked up? I have a desk top computer with a wireless card installed. Sometimes I receive a very weak bootleg signal, but want to know if it is possible to have my own signal (not bootlegged) without needing a phone line. Can anyone help me?

Your own connection requires at least one of the following:
1) phone line for DSL or dialup
2) cable TV that has internet access packaged with it
3) cell phone internet access (either using your cell phone as a modem or with a dedicated card connected to your laptop
4) FYI, Satellite internet access uses the satellite for data transfer TO your computer. Sending data FROM your computer still requires another method, such as a phone or cable connection.

You can get DSL or Cable without an ACTIVE phone line. Other options is a satelite provider but i dont really recomend that one, you can go through your cell phone company and get a wireless card through them which is pretty fast and you get online wherever you got a phone signal.

You can have a wirless router installed in your home but it has to connect to the internet either by phone line or cable or dsl connection. It's basically a modem that transmits a wirless signal but it has to get it's connection from somewhere.

You can get Internet service through your cable company, through a satellite Internet company, or by using a WLAN card from a company like Verizon Wireless.

Here's a review of the Verizon unit which attaches through a USB port: http://www.evdoinfo.com/content/view/872/40/
