The Bolsheviks as a party had been around for quite a while before the October Revolution. They emeged as a split from the Russain Social Democratic Party, over the question of the world war. (Bolsheviks opposed the war, while many socialist groups supported their own countries in the war.)
The Bolsheviks were a small party of "professional revolutionaries." As conditions in Russia developed, they won widespread support from the workers of Petrograd and the soldiers at the front.
