it's not anywhere on the system. i found it in 'search' and the uninstall shield wizard goes halfway and stops and then goes of the screen. i removed the desktop shortcut, ad & remove, and in the side panel. so how come it still starts up??

Have a look in your start up files. This program tends to leave itself all over the place, which is a good indication of how useless it is!

Click on "Start", and then "Run"

In the box type "msconfig"

Click on the "Startup" tab

Go down the list and look for the PCGuard exe. It will prob. have a shortened name but will still be pretty obvious.

Remove the green tick and click OK

You will be asked to restart your PC, choose yes.

On restart you will get a warning that you have changed the startup. Before you click it off, make sure you tick the box to ensure you don't get this every time.

When you are doing this you can also have a look for any other bits of software which are activating themselves at start up, and turn them off in the same way. Things like Quicktime, ctfmon.exe. AVG control centre (ACC), etc.

As you have deleted it from add/remove control you will find the only parts of this left are in the registry.
Manually remove the containing folder in"program files" if your brave enough, or download CCcleaner and do a registry search. The cleaner will find the parts of the program that have not been removed and show them as incomplete files, or as files with no path, also it will find and remove the registry values relating to the pc guard.
Hope this helps,

John

Download Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel, it's free.

http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

Run it and find the box associated with virgin PC guard. Uncheck the box and reboot. If yiouy ever want to turn it back on, check the box again, it does not delete the software, it just keeps it from starting up.

go on to your Start menu and find the Virgin pc Guard location on the start menu: all programs list and with out clicking on anything yet. if it has an arrow next to it when you rest the cursor on it another part of the menu will come up and it should say Uninstall Virgin pc Guard if not then still find its location on the list, right click on it and then delete it. if these still dont ( though at least one of them should) work then i can't help you my friend. ; )
