My wife is a Type2 diabetec and she's on some type of medication to help get certain levels down. Anyway, a side effect is birth control and that's not the main reason why she was perscribed these pills. Sometimes it's frustrating for me because I know we'll have sex without a legitimate chance of her getting pregnant. I guess what I want to know is it possible for her to get pregnant even if she's on these pills? Thanks!

I suppose it's possible. Some insulin medications, like Metformin, actually increase your chances of conceiving.

Unless it makes her completely sterile, there's always a chance...not as good, if the medication affects fertility, but still...if you're having unprotected sex, there's pretty much always a chance.

Just talk to the many, many women out there who have gotten pregnant while taking the birth control pill.

I'm not sure what type of med she's on, but she may be able to ask her doctor to prescribe something that doesn't interfere with her fertility. As someone else stated, metformin actually increases fertility for most women.

I am a T2 diabetic and trying to conceive. If your wife is interested, I am a member of a wonderful online support group for diabetic women who are at all stages of conception. It's at http://www.diabeticmommy.com/

As a side note, it is very important that your wife work closely with her doctors before, during, and after her pregnancy in order to ensure that she and your child is healthy. While diabetic women can give birth to healthy children, we have a much, much higher rate of birth defects if our blood sugars aren't tightly controlled before and during our pregnancies. (Believe me, once she gets pregnant she will have a very hard time controlling her sugars.)

Best of luck to the two of you!

Ask the ob or pharmacist??? A lot depends on ovulation. The pharmacist would know what ingredients would be the birth control factor in these pills for diabetes. You may have to find a pharmacy that compounds meds....Those are my opinions...
