Bad
1. Saints.
Deuce McAllister, Reggie Bush, Marques Colston, Devery Henderson, and Drew Brees. Did the rest of the NFL just successfully decode this stacked offense? Then again, one could make the argument that Drew Brees is only picking up where he left off. He looked awful in the final games of last season and is playing equally bad, if not worse, now. I don't think the Saints are utilizing the run effectively which could open up the passing lanes. How do you not effectively take advantage of the most multi-talented threat in football in Reggie Bush? The Chargers being 1-1 is not that much of a big issue...c'mon....they played a solid Pats team.

Good
1. Cowboys
I didn't expect Romo to show up like this! This is even more surprising in light of the fact that T. Glenn is out. He still has great weapons and a great tandem of running backs to anchor his game but the Cowboys look far better than expected. They are "thwomping" teams and hitting TD paydirt multiple times throughout games. Not too impressed with the 49ers because they're just squeezing by in a conference where, if they were serious contenders, they should be able to slaughter their opponents. Darrell Jackson is a disappointment and I just don't believe in the Alex Smith hype. Packers are a surprise but they'll eventually temper off and return to mediocre form as the season goes on. They have serious issues in the running game. Lions are a surprise given that they just put that team together and Calvin Johnson is hitting paydirt. I'd like to see Mike Furrey utilized more as I think he is an underrated 3rd option. At this point, they're a pleasant surprise but they need to open up that offense because they're too limited right now by relying too much on Kitna to the air. This could prove to be a serious liability against good pass rush defenses. The Redskins look sharp and Jason Campbell proved that he is the future but that's just it isn't it....the future, not today. Barely beating up a has-been Eagles team led by only Brian Westbrook's positive production does not speak well to me. Reggie Brown, all hype, no production.

A real surprise shocker....
Houston Texans
Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson are doing amazing things out there as the "other" Texas team. Running game is holding steady but could use improvement but that air attack is a surprise. I guess Schaub had a chip on his shoulder and the point is well taken. He wanted his shot and he is surely making the most of it by taking advantage of an athletically gifted Johnson. Defense is much improved and Super Mario may actually prove to live up to the hype.

Well, I tried to tell everyone that the Saints are a steady 8-8 team who have had 2 unusual seasons, one horrible and one good, due to the effects of a natural disaster, so no surprise there for me. I'm actually laughing all day long as I hear one talking head after another ask exactly the question I predicted they would, "What is wrong with the Saints?"

My biggest positive surprise would have to be the Lions. I expected some offensive fireworks but the defense looks better as well. Marinelli must be working some of his Tampa magic behind the scenes.

The biggest negative surprise has to be the complete lack of offensive production from the Chargers, especially Tomlinson. I didn't really expect too much from their defense because I've always thought it looked very suspect and vulnerable to short passes in the flat. The offense is very disappointing.

Lions at 2-0 are a good surprise. The Saints a bad surprise. Detroit just edges Green Bay. Brett Favre is amazing so their 2-0 isn't as big a surprise.

Gotta be the Lions, but we've seen this before. I remember a couple of seasons where they started out 6-2 and ended up 8-8. So those of us in the Motor City are just waiting for the other shoe to drop (probably in the form of key injuries). The Saints win the bad award. Very disappointing...

The most surprising thing that happened last week was the Browns posting 51 points. The most surprising thing this week is the oddsmakers still calling them underdogs against the lowly Raiders.
