This meteor hit on a old river flood plain.
Most likely the crater opened a area of old rotting vegetable mater trapped under a layer of mud.
This vegetable mater builds up a pocket of hydrogen sulfide gas.
When this was opened by the crater it will make people sick.
Note the water in the crater and the flat land all around it.

Hydrogen sulfide gas is dangerous in very low concentrations
40 ppm can kill 30 ppm will give the same symptoms as were reported at this crator
I have found these pockets while gold dredging in old river flood plains
I have also rescued people that had been poisoned by opening these pockets.
when they dig out the meteor they most likely will find a plain old nickle iron meteor about 2.5 to 3 foot diameter and weight about a 2000.to 3000 lbs

Most definitely this is the beginning of an invasion, but perhaps not the extra-terrestrial kind you're thinking of. I just read recent reports that contact with the Peruvian village was lost just 12 hours ago, and sattelite imagery shows the village to be teeming with people wandering the streets. How then could contact possibly be lost?
The answer is that the meteor contained the Z-virus, first found in fossilized form by scientists from craters discovered as early as 1908. The poor Peruvians have been turned by this virus into creatures not unlike zombies, hence the name of the virus. They have become ferocious cannibals, impervious to nearly all attack save for their one fatal flaw; their head. If you see one of these sick people, and rest assured you will as the virus spreads across the globe, aim for the head.
Z-day has arrived people, stock up and get ready.

From the video I saw of it, which showed some local with pieces of a grey rock in a napkin. It looks to be an aerolite or stone meteorite. Stone meteorites are more common but less recognized because they look more like native rocks.
The foul smell could easily be something in the soil that was vaporized by the extreme heat. Either way it's a really cool event, can't wait to see what they pull out of there.

more like a zombie movie. next we will loose contact with that area, but since it's in backwoods peru no one will notice at first.next thing you know plane loads of zombie from south america will begin landing in major cities of the world. if you thought the bird flu was a panic attack this one will kill you. unfourtunatally the u.s. will nuke parts of south america in a vain attempt to control the spread. the dead already walk the earth even as you read this. using the same mathmatical formulas that calculated the spread of the black plague i estimate human civilization has about 3 months left as a cohesive functioning body (give or take 4 days), then its hell on earth. remember, aim for the head. lock and load, put on your headphones and crank up the VNV nation.

I types "meteor peru" in the CNN search window and got the source. It talks about a possible meteor in Peru in early 2004, but says nothing about water of sickness. What headlines did you see?

It sounds so crazy to think that something comes down and people all get sick from it. That's some scary stuff. I guess I'm just happy that I don't live in Peru. I hope they are able to get those people help.
There's just so much we don't know about the universe.

The most likely explanation is that the people got sick from gas escaping from the Earth where the meteor struck. Meteors fall to Earth all the time, and there's never been any previous instance of anyone getting sick as a result. Don't be an alarmist!

You mean like Invasion of the Body Snatchers!!? When those little flowers started budding up all over the place and the next thing you know, people are falling asleep and their bodies go into the pods and they change into zombies?? Oh man! I hope that's not what's happening...

The impact of the meteorite probably stirred up some bacteria in the soil that's making everyone sick. I wouldn't be worried of an alien invasion. :P
