Here in Anchorage our city assembly enacted a smoking ban in PRIVATELY OWNED drinking establishments. I realize this is a trend in many places these days but I do not agree with it. As for non-smokers there are plenty of establishments who voluntarily run smoke free already in existence. As for the radio ad campaign the Alaska Tobacco Control Alliance ran (playing up empoyee issues regarding second-hand smoke) people who work in bars do so of their own free will to begin with- it's not like they had to sign a contract to work there for X number of years or whatever. I hope this recently enacted law gets broken all over the place once winter sets in up here- it would serve our assemblymen right~

Matt, Tobacco is legal so I do have as much right to smoke as I do to ingest a big greasy double bacon cheeseburger or any other relatively unhealthy activity that the government has yet to outlaw.

Dizzazled, Agree strongly with your answer. Why not outlaw cussing or farting in public as well because we all know those activities will offend somebody.

Lis, Please do not TELL me to quit. I would rather die tomorrow doing my own thing than live to 100 doing what you or anyone else pushes me to do.

Cartman- Quit smoking and stop whining?!?~ I guarantee you if a federal, state or local entity was trying to impede your activity of choice, you would not call it whining. Don't forget Americans have the right to Life Liberty and Pursuit of happiness. What seems a nasty habit to you represents personal freedom to me.

Ohio has done the whole "ban public smoking" thing. I am a nonsmoker, but I didn't vote to ban. It sounds weird to a lot of people. But I believe it revokes our right to choice. It should be up to the owners of a business to allow people to smoke in their facilities. The bill writers made a big mistake when they put the ban up for vote. It was completely intentional and it worked. They added to the bill that if you do not vote the ban in, it will be permanent. And will not allow any change. Its set in stone. That scared a lot of people. What if they wanted to pass it later on? They couldn't. But with the law being passed, and the ban started, we still have the option to remove certain businesses from the ban. Thats okay. But its still not a very democratic law. It just doesn't make sense. Let the people decide if they want to have a cigarette after a meal. Or if they want to be in a smoke free area. That's just me.

If its an issue of public health, then you can't stop with cigarettes. You have to move on to fast food, trans fat, obesity, pollution, and anything else that may endanger the welfare of American citizens. Do not isolate smokers.

In repsonse:

Amen. Yeah. Smoking is an unhealthy habit. But there are far worse things one can do to a body.

For all those who said "stop smoking":
If you ever said you enjoyed sitting around a campfire then you have just admitted to knowingly expose yourself to hazardous materials, carbon monoxide, and SMOKE. People can be so hypocritical about it. Telling someone to stop smoking is like telling them to stop drinking soda, or playing a sport they love. Let them eat cake! Geeeeeez.

You don't have the right to give other people cancer. Same as the 2nd ammendment doesn't give you the right to shoot people at random. There is no "right" to smoke anyway. And people working in restaurants pretty much do because they can't get a better job. Everyone needs to earn a living. Wish they'd pass this law nationwide. There's a difference between smoking and unhealthy eating - the person eating the "greasy cheeseburger" doesn't shove it down the throat of everyone around them. Secondhand smoke is deadly. I think businesses that allow smoking should be allowed to be sued by anyone who has ever been there who gets cancer.

Are you trying to justify your addiction? Smoking is a nasty disgusting habit that should be taxed out of existence. Just quit already.

You are so right. Bet things would change if you had to eat all non-healthy food outside. Afterall that might offend health-nuts.
