I have heard it before as well, that you truly become an adult once both parents have died, the safety net is gone, no more calls to mom to ask about the baby's cholic, and no more asking dad about your car battery. You have to do it all yourself, without thier help and advice, come what may, and then it's your turn to do that for your kids. I am fortunate I still have my parents, but yes, I believe that statement is true, and I think that being an adult on your own is different from being an adult with thier expertise to call on.....

A person may experience this new level of adulthood even though both parents are still alive.

This level is fraught with responsibilities specially if this involves someone other than yourself. For instance, both parents are in the hospital, bills have to be paid and your younger sibling needs looking after. You may experience this at an early age specially in countries whose social services are wanting. Ever wonder why many young women in Asia end up in the flesh trade?

There is a positive side to all this. If, for instance you had the education, most likely vocational, or exceptional talent. Added serious responsibilities may bring you to that level of adulthood commonly known as maturity at an early age.

Remember, maturity is not dependent on age.

My mom swears by it. She says at first it is a terrifying, lonely, "Oh God, I'm an orphan!" kind of feeling. Then, eventually, hopefully, depending on your choices it will lead to a self confidence and pride in the knowledge that you can handle your business and make it on your own. Apparently when things are at their worst the feeling of,"I want my mom!" never goes away.
