Given the premise that lying is allegedly the new currency, what would be the outcome WERE politicians were to tell the truth... the WHOLE TRUTH... and NOTHING BUT the TRUTH?

Feel free to give an example.... or 6...

I believe that politicians do tell the truth, but that most sugar coat it, or use words to make it sound more palatable so that they will get voted in. Then once they get voted in either they can't do what they said they would do or do what they wanted to do because others stop them from within (for instance the senate or congress), or when in office they find out that it's not as easy as they thought it would be to do what they said they would do, or because they can't do it because of peer pressure (the public, other countries), or they find that it would be too costly to do, or because another country has thrown a wrench into the plan, or that the public has changed their minds on the project, or because other things must be done first before the project they promised, etc. Sometimes we get a smoke screen from the politicians because what they are discussing among themselves or deciding to do is none of our business (because we don't know all the facts, or what outcomes could possibly occur), or because if we knew then someone (or the press) would blab and ruin the plans. There are things in government that the public just doesn't need to know. We vote the politicians in for a purpose, why not let them do their job. These days we think we need to know everything. In the past people trusted their government officials. So why not trust them now? More than likely some don't trust them because of computers, how outspoken people have become, and at a faster pace (quick response without thinking things out first before opening their mouths).

Most do tell the 'truth'. The truth isn't an absolute - it can be shaped into many forms and that is exactly what politicians are good at doing. Funding in the NHS has increased in the last 10 years - it might be true but it may ignore inflation.
It's all word / statistics play which politicains and journalists love. It is very hard to catch them out and actually accuse them of lying!

Last time someone did that people nail him to a tree.

We don't want the whole truth and nothing but the truth. We just want enough information that says we are right and the rest are lies.

I will give you example of truth when Bush said on 9/11 this will be hard to stop the Muslim terrorists it wasn't recieved well by liberals.

What another slice of the truth that people can't handle.

G-d is not a conservative or liberal.
He is the truth and the light.
Yet both like to morph what is written to conform to what they to believe.

i am old so i remember the Goldwater Johnson election. Goldwater told the things that would have to be done if we wanted to get out of Vietnam with any dignity at all. he was called a hawk and attacked by liberals who are still alive and well today. Johnson lied and told ppl what he thought they wanted to hear and he got elected.

within approx 6 months, Johnson started doing most everything that Goldwater said needed to be done..that was when i realized that the public doesn't want to hear the cold hard truth, they want it sugar coated and a fantasy land. i do not blame politicians for lying. we make them do it so we get what we deserve....you can look it up as it is a part of our history.

I hope you appreciate most politicians don't lie - the media makes mincemeat out of the few that do. Don't forget that most of what you hear about from politicians is from the mouths of newspaper who want to sell you a story and will twist is this way and that to get the best effect.

In fact politicians get so technical with their language precisely because the media are so apt at twisting things for their own gain.

Its not possible for politicians to tell the truth. The whole political system runs on lies and half truths and avoiding admitting anything!..

A very bad idea. Diplomacy requires the ability either stretch the truth or outright lie to win for your side.

Abe Lincoln I think told the truth. He populated his cabinet with people who opposed him prior to being elected in order to get a more global view of leading. I think it took a terrible toll on him but I think he did the best for this country.

We would actually get something done... or rather, we would fall apart. If we actually knew the WHOLE truth, we would be obligated to take some responsibility for our country's actions. Ignorance is bliss when you are an average American citizen.
