Look at the history of paganism and the cholhic religions heavy hand against it. Its simply a extention of the behavoir. Witchcraft is also seen as being a commune with the devil, all though such religions as wacca are nothing of the sort. It was the fear of peganism and the devil that leds most to proscute the power people accused of this. So, socially it was fear based, and used in a way for social control, like most religions. The religions factors is that in the best light its seen as being paganism, in the worst light, as communing with the devil....
