Winters are brutal in Boston, just to be honest with you. There was a few years where it was not so bad, but there would always be the frigid days, no matter what. I loved Massachusetts, but I live in Florida now...the winter was the only complaint I have about MA. (Besides the taxes.)

I went to college up north, and I was scared of freezing too. I asked everyone during the first week what they recommended I wear. They told me to get really warm boots, with flat soles (not high heel fashion boots) and always wear a hat. It often got down to -5 and was very windy, but I actually learned to LOVE it! I survived. Snow is messy but it is also beautiful and it can make an amazing hush settle over the city that is really peaceful. Of course, you will have to get used to the idea of leaving extra travel time or waking up early to find out if it snowed and you have to shovel, etc. But when spring comes, you will really really appreciate it!!

In January and February - you'll freeze your tail feathers off.
It gets really cold, for what seems like forever in the winter here. If you dress appropriately it's tolerable. Don't dress for fashion, dress for warmth. Familiarize yourself with the LL Bean catalog;)
For your personal growth, do it. New England is absolutely a wonderful part of the US. Don't let a few weeks of lousy weather scare you away from what is IMHO the most beautiful part of the US. You'll be a better person in the long run.

LOL, you'll get cold but you won't freeze to death! Unless, of course, you're planning on wearing very few clothes and living on the streets? As long as you bundle up and don't hang around outdoors all the time, you'll be fine.
Boston winters are cold, but not terrible. I moved there from Montana where we would get temps of -40 sometimes (but still get up to 100 in the summer) and Boston's winter was pretty mild in comparison.

WOW! That would be a big change. I would say dress in extra layers.More than the native Bostonian's until you get used to it . It may take you a couple year's to adjust .
The average winter temps seem to be in the upper 20's to the 30's .

Which desert do you live in? Most American deserts get very cold in parts of winters, most also see some snow.
Are you on the up and up?

Yes, everyone who lives in Boston eventually dies from the weather. LOL No, of course not! I will be hard to get used to, but you may love it- who knows! It will be something different. You'll adjust, if you are willing to!
