It seems to me that nothing is wrong with you except lack of life experince! You are in the same boat as many young people. Just listen more and also observe how others chat, what they talk about and what kind of topics interests you. take each encounter as an experiment in life, a learning experince. Soon you will master the art of conversation and be as goo as others, even better. have faith and confidence in yourself. The fact thhave written at ask how to improve your self is a 100 % certainity that you will be a master converationalist very soon. have this faith and take one step at a time. Dont ever believe that something is " wrong' with you! you can search the internet- google or other on how to improve social skills. people like politeness, and always listen then respond in a positive way. Tell people what they like to hear- a genuine compliment always cheers people up.
Be diplomatic and read a lot to increase your general knowledge so that you can join in debates or conversations- such as sports or movies or tv serials, gardening, computers, develop your personality by asking your self- what are my god- gifted talents, what do i really like doing( not just pleasing my b/f ). In this wAY you can research oyur own self and learn so much- your self confidence will rise automatically if you know your talents and special qualities.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with you, in fact you are a caring and intelligent individual because you think and plan ahead. Even if it doesn't work out the way you planned, you ensure that you have a back-up plan on what to talk about. You will find this a useful exercise in all social occasions, whether or not you actually discuss what you had in mind.

The planning ahead of time shows your level of anxiety about the coming encounter. Whether you define yourself as shy or not, you are. You are uncomfortable in social situations, which is what shy is. You could try some therapy, probably group, and there are some medications to help take the edge off of social anxiety disorder. Otherwise, try to remember that you wouldn't worry nearly as much about what people thought of you if you realized how seldom they did.

It does sound like you might have a self esteem problem, or possibly social anxiety. Most of the time when we are so wrapped up in ourselves and our fears, we don't listen to other people. If you relaxed and listened the conversation will come easily. Ask him questions about himself everyone likes to talk about themselves.

i used to be the same the answer for me was
dont think so much
i was scared i would say the wrong thing so rehearse answers in my head
if they are your friends , just relax and say whatever comes into your head
it worked for me with my girlfriend

stop being so nervous and practicing what you will be talking about, just jump into the conversation and give your perspective of things, with a little practice you will feel more comfortable

well you gotta have the confidence to speak up when needed to. Thats all that is...you're probably not confident enough to do those things if you're not shy......but maybe you are and you don't know it.
