They have knees, but do not have knee caps... these don't form until the child is about 2 or 3 years old.

I suppose it depends on the true medical definition of a knee... all their joints have soft cartilidge coverings at first - elbows, knees, knuckles etc which is why they are all so dimpled (cute!) then the bone hardens up as they grow to make the bony, knobbly joints we all enjoy as older children and adults.

When babies are born they DO have knees, but not knee caps - otherwise how would they be able to bend their legs.

What he means is they don't have knee caps like ours when they are born and up till about 2yrs or so. They wouldn't be able to crawl properly with kneecaps (you know how sore ours get when we kneel down) The bone and cartilage hardens and develops as they grow and learn to walk.
Hope that clarify's!

Babies don't have knee CAPS until about 18 months. (I assumed it was because they have to crawl before they walk and if you have ever spent any time crawling, you know how uncomfortable knee caps can make it!)

Of course they have knees. Their legs look like frog legs because their knees are bent like a frogs.

Your boyfriend is right. The patella bone doesn't arrive until about the age of three. Before that, there is only cartilage there.
