We have a government of the people by the people and for the people. Note, the word people. It is all about people. We must keep informed and active. No where on earth does a government carry people like we do in the US. Doubt it, travel abroad a few years, come home, take a look and you will say, "We have the BEST in the World". I know, I have been doing this for years. In my time I have voted for Rep/Dem/Ind. Our worst beat the best of the world.
It gets back to the word people, our leaders are nothing more than PEOPLE. People are not perfect and as such you will find about 15 Poor Performers among any one hundred elected officials. Still, I say, we have the best overall.

Most of the actual wealth in this country is controlled by 1% or maybe 2% of the population. The middle class is being squeezed out of existence. It's a rich country for a handful of people -

I have talked to homeless people and was surprised that many of them do not want the hassles of living in a house with the responsibility of rent, utilities and such, of course where I live the winter months do not get really cold.
There is also a problem with welfare, those that get welfare assistance have no initiative to find jobs, they get by on what they get. Welfare needs to be reformed, assistance should be provided for a limited time and be coupled with job training and placement, while a person is on welfare they should have to submit to drug tests. If I have to take random drug tests to make my money, they should have to do the same to get their money and to be employable.
Elderly and disabled persons should get welfare assistance for as long as needed, neither of these classes of people are able to work.
My wife and I also give to charity's and when I see a person with a "Need Help" sign I will give them $10 to $20 so they can get a meal.
I know where you are coming from, we (the US) spends billions in foreign aid and it does seem that we neglect our own people.

PROBLEM: Some people refuse to help themselves. Many people on welfare and the vast majority of homeless people are simply looking for a handout. They want money to be forked over to them with no strings attached. This country is supposed to be the land of opportunity, NOT the land of entitlement. Being an American only guarantees you freedom. It doesn't guarantee you a job (or money if you refuse to work), it doesn't guarantee you an education, it doesn't guarantee care for your health and well-being, it doesn't guarantee you a comfortable retirement...get the picture?
We're supposed to take care of ourselves, not depend on the government for everything. See, any time a society depends on its government, that government has a huge amount of power to wield over the private citizen, and there's a lot of truth in the statement "power corrupts." Make a government too powerful and civil liberties go right out the window. You see it happening right now -- governments are banning the use of trans fat in cooking because they have decided that we as Americans are too stupid to make our own dietary choices. Ditto that for all the smoking bans in major cities and entire states. The last thing we want is the government trying to fix anything. Government power needs to be limited and individual citizens need to be responsible. If they choose to be homeless or lazy, then they deserve whatever they get.
P.S.: You're also a product of the entitlement society. Your question asked: "If we're a rich country, whey can't we get what we need or want?" No one is automatically entitled to have whatever they want -- you have to EARN it.

Some homeless people don't want help. They wont take it even when it is offered. Many cases of homeless people actually choosing life on the street. In Pittsburgh I volunteer at the Veterans hospital. There is a homeless vet who comes in for his diabetes treatment and medicine. He receives 100% disability check ( about $1,300.00 a month ) plus Social Security ( about $925.00 a month ) He has over 30 thousand dollars piled up in his checking account, and still eats in soup kitchens and sleeps under a bridge. You will never achieve 100% well off people.
Jesus said of the poor..."they will always be with us".
What makes this country "RICH" is our opportunity. There is an endless "richness" of opportunity , that doesn't garuntee everyone is able or even desires to take advantage of it.

We are "getting" right where the govt and the Rockfellers want us to be. It is called a new world order. Elitism at its finest. Did you actually think people were using the money for something worth while. It is more like a "lets do something to remember the ole times by having a charity event" some of the rich people are still in denail about what is happening or they try to make God think they are still good people .+
Demand an audit from your govt!

Quite simply Americans - regardless whoever is in charge - don't trust their governments.
You would not hear the saying "good enough for government work" in German or Greek because they regard their public service to be generally competent and impartial.
If people trust their government they are prepared to pay taxes and endorse a welfare state that protects the poor and weak.

Did you ever go out to try to find the sick, poor and homeless? They may be out there somewhere, but you will be hard-pressed to find them.
This summer, The Chicago Tribune did a study of the homeless in the Chicago area. The city government claimed there were 6,000 people living on the street.
Over a three-week period, reporters found 25 homeless people.
From Harry Truman, I learned the expression: "There are lies, damn lies, and statistics." Unless you go out and do your own count, don't automatically believe what you read.

I think the premise of this nation is founded on the individuals right to earn their living through hard work. nothing is stopping people from working hard and becoming wealthy. Many people have started with nothing and became very wealthy. The only thing stopping folks today is the goverment.
