I have a chain link fence exactly on our property line, the fence is mine. He has some ugly weed like thing (non-intentional, he didn't plant it or anything) growing like wildfire on my fence. The plant itself is like an inch rooted in his yard....but it entangles my fence. Can I rip it out? thanks!

Thanks everyone, also wanted to add that I believe he likes the weed because it adds privacy between our yards, and since we are new I haven't introduced myself yet. I don't care about the privacy...it's just ugly and overgrown and I want it gone, but this guys leaves it there for that reason (according to the previous owners). Thanks for all the suggestions!

Go over and introduce yourself. Do remember, you will live next door for a long time. Does he need help to control it? Is it pulling the fence down? If you become a friendly neighbor first, you may get what you want in the long run.

Have you discussed this issue with your neighbor? It's possible that he wants it gone too since you say he didn't plant it. I'm not an attorney but I would imagine you have every right to remove the growth from your fence. If that's what you do consider spraying something on your side of the fence to keep it knocked down.

The laws of ownership and land are specific to each city and region. The best thing you can do is to go to your neighbor and ask them. "Hey, there's this weed growing on the fence, and unless y ou really like weeds, I plan to get rid of it, is that ok? I wanted to check with you becuase some of it is growing on your side of the fence and I'm just being a good neighbor blah blah blah"....

You can't pull it up from their side, but you can certainly get rid of it on your side and off of your fence. But of course, try talking to them first, they might even tell you they don't want it there either and just some simple weed killer will take care of it all.

if you weed your neighbors yard i think they will have no problem with it(come weed mine if you like) but just ask them if it is OK with them(cant see a problem as you are doing it & not them)

You can remove parts of the vine that trespass onto your property, as long as it doesn't sap the vitality of the rest of the vine.

i think that anything that overhangs on your property you can deal with. anything on the neighbors side is theres. maybe ask your neighbor if you could tear it out yourself.
